Frank Ocean Shades Kanye: ‘I Like the Way Michelle Wolf Thinks’

If there's one thing that Frank Ocean loves, it's Tumblr. The elusive but vocal singer took to the platform to share his support of comedian Michelle Wolf, who has been getting quite a bit of backlash for her scathing performance at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner.

“I like the way Michelle Wolf thinks,” the singer wrote in the post, referencing Kanye West's tweet praising conservative personality Candace Owens. The previous post is a simple screenshot of the rapper standing next to Mike Myers during the 2005 telethon where he famously said that then-President George Bush “doesn't care about black people.”

Wolf took on current president Donald Trump, his administration, and press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders at the WHCD. Some critics accused Wolf of body shaming with her Sanders “smoky eye” joke. Fellow comedian Dave Chappelle has already come to her defense, saying she “nailed it,” while Wolf herself does not regret anything she said at the podium. “I wouldn't change a single word that I said. I'm very happy with what I said,” she told NPR, “and I'm glad I stuck to my guns.”

In fact, some of the first rounds of reports have also been leaving out important information, such as details regarding their offers. For instance, only Boston and Toronto have released information to the public about their deals.

Amazon recently lost value in the stock market after Donald Trump tweeted that the company was burning the United States Postal Service.

MSNBC Anchor Quotes Mobb Deep While Dissing President Trump

MSNBC Chief Legal Correspondent Ari Melber used a quote from Mobb Deep’s famed 1995 cut “Shook Ones Part II” to insult President Donald Trump on Friday night during his show, The Beat With Melber. Melber was discussing the president’s abuse of executive privilege within the frame of Nixon’s impeachment.

“[Nixon’s impeachment case is] worth bearing in mind as the Trump White House now stonewalls investigators, but insist it’s not really invoking executive privilege, or it’s trying some kind of modified halfway executive privilege,” Melber said.

He continued, “But there’s no such thing as halfway privilege, just as there’s no such thing as halfway crooks. We know that truth from the great poet Havoc of Mobb Deep who observed that true criminal minds are always thirsty for recognition, but you don’t see longevity from halfway crooks, ‘cause they always end up shook. And that’s the big problem facing any White House pursuing a cover up with halfway privilege.”

Melber revealed materials from President Nixon’s Watergate scandal back in 1972. The materials displayed exactly how exploiting executive privilege can be a crime and an impeachable offense. Executive privilege, per NPR, means, “a president has the right to withhold certain information from Congress, the courts or anyone else—even when faced with a subpoena.”

According to Melber, “the abuse of executive privilege was literally part of the basis for the obstruction articles against Nixon in his impeachment.” The lawyer who wrote the articles of impeachment for Nixon’s case told Melber how Trump may be headed down the same path. Melber used Mobb Deep’s lyrics to show why there isn’t such a thing as “halfway privilege.” The exact Mobb Deep lyrics that Melber referenced were from the song's hook, “Scared to death, scared to look, they shook/‘Cause ain't no such things as halfway crooks.”

Havoc posted a clip to Instagram of Melber quoting “Shook Ones Part II” with the caption, “Just as I was watching the homie @arimelber couldn’t be put any better!! Ain’t no such thing as #halfwaycrooks 🔥 #msnbc.”

Late Friday night, Melber also took to Instagram and posted a photo of himself with the message, “You can’t quote rap too much.” His caption read, “Real quote, although my inbox shows many, many people disagree,” followed by an eye-roll emoji.

Ryan Coogler Reveals How Kendrick Lamar Got Involved With ‘Black Panther: The Album’

The anticipation for Marvel’s Black Panther flick is getting stronger and stronger each day. But perhaps equally anticipated is the film’s soundtrack produced Kendrick Lamar and his label Top Dawg Entertainment.

In the days leading up to the release of Black Panther: The Album, director Ryan Coogler spoke to NPR about the project and how the TDE crew eventually became involved. He revealed that the initial plan was for Kendrick to contribute only a few songs to the film; however, the rapper’s role became much greater after he was given an extended look at the movie.

“I've been a massive Kendrick fan ever since I first heard him, since his mixtapes, and I've been trying to track him down,” Coogler said. “Eventually I caught up with him a couple years ago—first with Anthony 'Top Dawg' Tiffith, who runs his label, and then later on sat down with him and Kendrick and just spoke about much his music affected me. He talked about my movies that he had seen, and we said if the opportunity comes, we'd love to work with each other on something.”

Shortly after K-Dot completed his fourth studio album Damn, Coogler reached out to the rapper to discuss his involvement.

“To Marvel's credit, they really supported the idea of getting some songs from him,” the director explained. “At first, he was just going to do a few songs for the film, and then he came in and watched quite a bit of the movie, and the next thing I know, they were booking a studio and they were going at it.”

TDE producer Sounwave told NPR that the team had started working on the album during Kendrick’s Damn Tour last summer, and that about half of the soundtrack’s concepts were developed while on the road.

“[During] The Damn Tour, we probably came up with 50 percent of it — the production, the hooks and ideas,” he said. “When we got back from the tour in September, that's when we were able to execute our ideas and reach out to people we respect and whatnot … kind of just put the stamp on it. So, I want to say those two months was the most vital on that tour, in terms of creative process.”

Black Panther: The Album includes appearances by everyone from SZA and the Weeknd to James Blake and Travis Scott to Vince Staples and Jorja Smith. The film’s score was helmed by Coogler’s previous collaborator Ludwig Göransson, who is best known for his work with Childish Gambino. This fact made many fans wonder: Why wasn’t Childish included on the soundtrack?

Though the “Redbone” artist didn’t receive a credit on Black Panther: The Album, it turns out he did contribute to the film’s sound. Rolling Stone’s film critic Peter Travers pointed this out in his recent review, in which he applauded the composer’s work as well as the various hip-hop artists who assisted him.

“[…] It's fair to mention Ludwig Goransson's rousing score with hip-hop song contributions from the likes of Kendrick Lamar, Sam Dew, Vince Staples and Childish Gambino,” he wrote.

We’ll have to wait and see just how big Childish’s contribution was.

Chance the Rapper: The ’90s Produced ‘So Many Fabricated Hood N***as’

A lot of traditionalist hip-hop fans would reject this premise, but rarely has there ever been a more diverse period for the genre. There are all sorts of colorful personalities in the game right now, from a deep-thinking, hard-hitting lyricist like Kendrick Lamar, to a stage-diving, crooning rock star like Lil Uzi Vert. There's plenty of room to debate your preferences, but there have never been more options for listeners.

Chance the Rapper's brand of uplifting positivity is another slice of that bigger pie, and he credits some artists who came before him for opening the door for him. During an interview with Stretch and Bobbito for NPR, Chance credited Kanye West for opening the door for people like him, in a sense making it cool just to be yourself behind the mic.

“The fact that it's able to be a main stage or mainstream image, and accepted and celebrated is because of folks like Kanye,” said Chance. “[He] came in the game and was like 'This is who I am, and these are the type of things that I love, and I'm excited about them, and I don't necessarily have to carry myself as anybody that I'm not.' And people picked up on it.”

You can definitely look at Kanye as a major influence on what people think of when they hear the words “rap music.” He came into the game rocking polo and wearing backpacks, playing up his college dropout image. Though there were plenty of artists before him who showed multiple dimensions—2Pac comes to mind in particular—Kanye's particular brand of individuality is hard to deny.

This was important, Chance says, because when he was growing up, he believes artists felt they had to be or act a certain way to establish credibility. He specifically pointed to a particular brand of music during the '90s, when he felt there were too many studio gangsters pretending to be someone they weren't.

“There's always been a quiet conversation and joke that if you're not hard, if you're not from impoverished neighborhoods, if you're not certain constructs of a black stereotype, then you not black,” he explained. “Niggas kinda ran with that in the '90s I think, and that's why there were so many fabricated hood niggas. But now, a lot of black people have a lot more pride in being who they are, and understanding that is part of the black experience, is living and being who you are. I think it's more accepted on the main stage.”

Though it's at least a partial dig at '90s rap, it sounds like it was intended as more of a celebration of artists today, who feel like they have more options than they would have even 15 years ago. Maybe it's a reflection of how the audience for rap has grown and transformed over the last few decades, but it does feel like there's space for artists from all sorts of backgrounds, provided they have an interesting message to share.

Kyrie Irving Is Inspiring Middle School Students to Believe the Earth Is Flat

Put on your tin foil hats and brace yourself. Did you know that the earth is flat? That we've been lied to over and over again, becoming victims of a massive conspiracy orchestrated by those at the highest echelons of government to keep the masses ignorant of this mind boggling and potentially liberating fact? Noted flat earth truther and tin foil hat wearer—and future former Cleveland Cavaliers player—Kyrie Irving is unfortunately helping to spread the conspiracy among our nation's children. While speaking to NPR, middle school teacher Nick Gurol said that his students, thanks to Irving, staunchly believe that the world is flat.

Gurol remarked, “And immediately I start to panic. How have I failed these kids so badly they think the Earth is flat just because a basketball player says it?” The educator said that he has tried to get the students to understand that the world is indeed round, to no avail. The influence of Irving was just too strong. 

Irving's flat earth world view became known earlier this year, while the basketball player spoke to Richard Jefferson and Channing Frye on a podcast. 

“The earth is flat,” Irving stated with conviction. “This is not even a conspiracy theory,” he said, though it is definitely a conspiracy theory. He offered “they” as the answer as to who was behind the supposed large-scale misinformation campaign. “I’m telling you, it’s right in front of our faces. They lie to us,” Irving said.

The basketball player, who is not an astronomer, continued. “What I’ve been taught is that the earth is round. But if you really think about it from a landscape of the way we travel, the way we move and the fact that, can you really think of us rotating around the sun and all planets aligned, rotating in specific dates, being perpendicular with what’s going on with these planets.”

Mike Will Made-It Reveals Beat for Kendrick’s “Humble” Was Originally Made for Gucci Mane

Mike Will Made-It has had no trouble building a production empire without the assistance of Kendrick Lamar. The Georgia native's influence on music has been vast over the last few years, with the superproducer teaming up with everyone from Miley Cyrus to Future.

When you're bouncing from job-to-job (in a good way!) like he has, there's bound to be work you produced with one artist in mind that ended up being a better fit with someone else. That appears to be the case on “Humble,” Kendrick's first ever No. 1 single as a lead artist and the first single for Damn. Mike Will told NPR when he first made the beat, it was with Gucci Mane in mind:

I made that beat [last year] when Gucci Mane was getting out of jail; I made it with him in mind. I was just thinking, damn, Gucci's about to come home; it's got to be something urgent that's just going to take over the radio. And I felt like that beat was that.

I ended up not doing it with Gucci and I let Kendrick hear it. I was thinking, if Dot gets on this it'll be his first time being heard on some[thing] like this. At the same time, it kind of has an NWA/Dr. Dre feel, an Eminem kind of feel. So I thought, let me see if Dot f**** with it. And he heard the beat and he liked it.

When you hear the beat kick in on “Humble,” it does sound a lot more up Gucci's alley than Kendrick's. Coming off a jazzy project like To Pimp A Butterfly, the trap-inspired beats on Damn represent a change of pace for K-Dot. Don't expect any ice cream tattoos on Kendrick's face anytime soon, but he has proven he can weave in and out of different styles with the best in the game; in his early days, Kendrick even flipped a Gucci sample into a song about materialistic obsessions.

Mike Will also shared a story about the creation of “DNA,” a fan favorite and the second single from Damn. Impossible though it may sound, the producer claims he only made the beat for “DNA” after Kendrick rapped the entire song a cappella​ and challenged him to build the production around his voice.

“[Kendrick] said, 'I just want to see if you can put some drums around this,'” said Mike Will. “I said, 'Man, hell yeah.' But he was going so hard; that man was rapping so crazy. Just imagine him a cappella rapping the second half of 'DNA.' and I had to build a beat around that.”

That creative process would explain the dramatic change-up halfway through “DNA”; Kendrick transitions rather quickly from a laid-back, conventional flow to artillery fire on the mic, and it necessitates a shift in the song's mood. Thankfully, Mike Will was there to guide the song where it needed to go. 

The two have reportedly spent countless hours in the studio before they officially put it on wax for Damn. Hopefully the success of “Humble” and “DNA” inspires more collaborations between the hip-hop heavyweights in the future.

Facebook Looks To Double Down On Music With New Hire

Facebook already has its hands in nearly every facet of entertainment and integration known to man, but its relationship with music has always been somewhat precarious. As NPR puts it, “Given the kaleidoscopic legal, contractual and statutory nature of music’s business, coordinating a technical and legal framework for Facebook’s 1.79 billion monthly users to engage with music as they’ve grown accustomed to in the digital age — meaning in any way, at any moment they wish — is practically Sisyphean.”

Now, Facebook is looking to try to bridge the gap between its nearly 2 billion person userbase and the music industry with the hire of Tamara Hrivnak, YouTube’s past director of music partnerships. The hope is that Hrivnak will be able to navigate the labyrinthine music industry for Facebook and develop deals with major labels that will allow users to interact with music on Facebook – that is, without leaving the site for a third-party publisher.

A source close told NPR that “Hrivnak’s primary role will be to lead Facebook’s global music licensing strategy, and to deepen relationships with the music industry more generally.” It was also said that rather than try to react to changes in the music industry as they’re happening, Facebook will be adopting a more proactive stance.

Facebook’s last foray into music is probably something you’ve seen for years now, but never knew had a name: Music Stories.

Introduced in 2015, these stories gave users 30 second clips of audio/songs, though as the EDM community knows from Souncloud, 30 second clips are hardly worth anything and users quickly lose interest.

Facebook pointed to Hrivnak’s post (above) when asked for clarification on her role, but if the social media company is to continue expanding into media and technology, music is one frontier that it needs to engage with.

Mysteryland USA Delivers Full Lineup By Day/Stage, Announces U.S. Debut of Comedy Tent + More

As the dates of the 3rd annual Mysteryland USA quickly approach, the festival has officially confirmed its full day-by-day lineup. Taking place on June 10th-13th, the festival will be returning to the Bethel Woods Center For The Arts – home of the renowned 1969 Woodstock festival. With huge acts like ODESZA, Skrillex, and Bassnectar headlining the main stage, new artist additions like Amtrac, Autograf (Live), Mikey Lion & Deep Jesus, Penguin Prison and Roman Flugel have been added to bring the festival’s lineup to the next level. Apart from the musical side of things, a speakers program will also be present courtesy of NPR host Anya Kamenetz as well as Mysteryland USA’s first-ever comedy tent hosted by SNL personality Kyle Mooney.

Keeping to the core values of Woodstock to sustain and respect nature and foster communal bonds, Mysteryland USA will be implementing a number of eco-focused initiatives. To start, for every person who purchases a 3-day festival pass through the April 18-24 (aka Earth Week), Mysteryland will donate $10 towards bringing clean water to the schools affected by enhanced levels of lead in the Newark Public School System. A number of on-site initiatives will also be included, such as carpool options, a Green Team for garbage collection, a camping recycling program, and more.
