Your EDM Month In Music – February 2017

And we’re back with the month’s latest recap of the biggest releases in the dance music world. In this iteration of our Month In Music recap, we saw huge releases from the likes of Calvin Harris, Flume, Kygo and The Chainsmokers.

The final (full) week of the month saw a flurry of hits from the dance/pop superstars. Calvin Harris released “Slide,” a hot crossover collaboration with the current music industry’s A-list talent featuring the likes of Migos and Frank Ocean on vocals for a soothing ride-along track. Eternal hitmakers Coldplay teamed up with arguably the biggest name in dance music at the moment The Chainsmokers for “Something Just Like This” receiving immediate praise from a plethora of fans and ‘this sounds like Roses 2.o’ comments from the tracks detractors. Kygo teamed up with Selena Gomez for “It Ain’t Me” a song you would hear everywhere in the US if it weren’t for the cold weather the vast majority of the country is victim to right now.

Australian super-talent, Flume released his second companion EP to his sophomore album Skin with 4 unique singles including “Depth Charge” which made the cut. Cashmere Cat also dropped another single “Love Incredible” with Camila Cabello off of his upcoming album Wild Love.

Some of the months standout singles this February came from the likes of Tchami, Malaa, REZZ & K?d, Axwell ^ Ingrosso, WRLD & SMLE, Loud Luxury, and Arty.

French future house master Tchami rang in the new year with his first single of 2017 “Adieu” a soothing deep house track with tropical inspired vibes. Malaa, alongside the support of names like Tchami & DJ Snake, rang in the new year with his first track of 2017, “Bylina” in his typical fashion showing off his signature G house sound.

Our ears were graced with one of the most hyped tracks during the beginning of the year coming from meteoric riser K?d and mau5trap queen REZZ for the eerie hard-hitting single “Fourth Impact.”

We saw the release of Axwell^Ingrosso’s next single with rapper Kid Ink “I Love You” making you think back to the good old nostalgia inducing days whenever you see those two names on a track.

In conjunction with their new Stranded Tour WRLD & SMLE just released “Stranded” a playful ethereal tune with chiptune and crunchy electro vibes accompanied by catchy vocals.

Canadian powerhouse Loud Luxury released “Something To Say” a deep house club banger with Ryan Shepherd first premiered on Tiësto’s AFTR:HRS debut compilation album.

Near the end of the month we also saw Arty release “Falling Down” with pop vocalist Maty Noyes who has done work with The Weeknd & Kygo.

This month’s standout remixes came from the likes of: Major Lazer, Grey, Kill The and Noise.

Major Lazer remixed Ed Sheeran’s number one single “Shape Of You” with vocalists: N’yla & Kranium for added dancehall vibes.

Zedd’s protege Grey gave their go at Mike Posner’s “In the Arms Of A Stranger” giving it their usual poppy LFO-heavy flair.

Kill The Noise remixed Zomboy’s “Like A Bitch” actually adding in the word “bitch” during the song and giving probaly the most played out dubstep tune of 2016 a new vibe.

There’s a whole lot more to digest, so be sure to find yourself some free time (one hour and forty-five minutes to be precise), kick back, and relax to our brand new Month In Music playlist!

Axwell Λ Ingrosso Release Collaboration With Kid Ink ‘I Love You’

Last month Axwell Λ Ingrosso teased their brand new collaboration with Kid Ink at Sunburn Festival. On first listen the single was undeniably catchy with Kid Ink very much the star of the show. Now, the song has just been officially released and I’m pleased to say that it’s just as catchy as it was the first time we heard it.

The song opens with some familiar orchestral strings similar to “Bittersweet Symphony” before Kid Ink takes over the first verse amidst some percussion-driven production. The orchestral strings and soothing vocals return in the chorus to provide the perfect melodic counterpart to Kid Ink’s verses.

Experience the Tunnel of Λ in Video by Axwell & Ingrosso

Axwell & Ingrosso have dangled yet another carrot in front of us with the release of the video for ‘Dream Bigger.’ Or rather, that carrot is upside down and we, the viewer, are descending into it as if it were a black hole of dreams. Some of it you’ll recognize (New York’s Flat Iron Building makes several cameos), and with some of it you’ll make your own meaning after seeing it again and again. Overall though, the instrumental for ‘Dream Bigger’ lends itself to this triangular trippy world continuously as it consumes the viewer. The distinct Justice-esque vibes are a perfect catalyst for the audio-visual mindfuck of the video.

The video comes following the Spotify premiere of the track on New Year’s Eve. With the full scope of the track releasing in pieces like this, all we can do is wait for the next carrot (the addition of vocals by Pharrell) to appear. Maybe one day the biggest of their golden carrots (a full album from the duo) will drop. But when that happens remains to be seen though we expect it some time this year. For now, take a moment and dive into an experience that only two former members of the Swedish House Mafia can give us, one that blows our minds:

Ultra South Africa Finalizes 2015 Lineup with DVBBS, Oliver Heldens, and More

In the second year of Ultra in South Africa, the lineup is looking like a DJ Mag-fanboy’s wet dream.

In the Phase 2 lineup that was announced yesterday, filling out the already stacked lineup, were DVBBS, Gorgon City and Oliver Heldens.

As major festivals begin to emerge in other countries, we will begin to see lineups that look a lot like this, catering to the popular choice rather than perhaps utilizing the host nation’s own talent. However, this is just the second year of the festival, and there is a lot of native talent, including Goldfish and and Black Coffee, to keep things fresh.

“The additional lineup also boasts the likes of Elrow resident DJs Marc Maya, De Law Swing and Toni Varga, alongside South African homegrown talents Black Coffee and Goldfish. Billed as the “largest electronic music festival in Africa’s history,” with a total expected attendance of 40,000, Ultra South Africa will be held Feb. 13 at Cape Town’s Ostrich Park and on Feb. 14 at Johannesburg’s NASRAC Expo Grounds.

General Admission tickets can still be obtained here.”

Swedish House Mafia’s Last Show Ever At Ultra 2013 [Video]

10649084_1010627968963305_3437918529641673585_oFor this week’s flashback Friday, we are taken back to the end of an era. It’s coming up on almost two years since the disbandment of Swedish House Mafia and most of us have yet to move on from the transition. Yes, Axwell / Ingrosso are great and Steve Angello is also doing well, but I can’t help but feel a void that their individual acts cannot fill.

The reality of the situation is that for those who entered the EDM scene circa 2009-2011, Swedish House Mafia most likely played a vital role in their introduction and immersion in the EDM culture. With their departure, we are older and wiser and our tastes have changed and evolved; yet, as we look back on what it was like just a few years ago, we can’t help but get a good kick in the nostalgia feels.

Relive the end of the Swedish House Mafia below:
